Start with the hardest part. Gerard O'Reilly, a longtime member of Vanguard's stock-indexing team, has passed away. He co-managed 15 index funds alongside Aaron Choi, Kenny Narzikul, Chris Nieves and Jena Stenger—all of whom remain in place.
O'Reilly's passing is tragic. But Vanguard's indexing bench is deep by design, and co-management exists precisely for moments like this. I don't expect fund shareholders to miss a beat—and I say that not to diminish O'Reilly's stewardship, but to acknowledge that the structure worked.
