Vanguard can’t seem to stay out of the courtroom.

The latest legal challenge stems from its 2021 acquisition of Just Invest, a direct indexing platform. The platform’s founders claim Vanguard acted in bad faith—both before and after the deal—to minimize their payouts.

I’m not a lawyer, so I’ll leave the legal wrangling to the courts. But the lawsuit brings to mind a question I’ve had for years: Why did Vanguard buy Just Invest?
